Celebrate a native son As Fourth of July weekend explodes with events that celebrate national pride, you can head over to Fox Point to commemorate a patriot from Providence, George M. Cohan. As a songwriter and performer, Cohan penned long-lasting jingles and set the standard for Broadway musicals. This weekend, Cohan will be honored at two events. On Friday, join local dignitaries and musicians near Cohan’s birthplace at Wickenden and Governor streets. The intersection will be renamed “The George M. Cohan Plaza” and a sculpture of Cohan will be unveiled. On Saturday, the Rhode Island Historical Society will offer a walking tour of Fox Point, followed by a lecture on the life of Cohan and a screening of the “Yankee Doodle Dandy.” The day’s events will culminate with entertainment and fireworks on the newly renovated waterfront at India Point Park. Have your cake and laugh a little too Bistro By The Sea is hosting a comedy series every Thursday night during the summer. Tonight’s kick-off event features Tony V, a nimble humorist with a quick wit and sharp eye for commentary. The family holds the court The International Tennis Hall of Fame & Museum is hosting a weekend of events to kick off next week’s Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships. The two-day Family Weekend will provide up-close opportunities to meet pro tennis players as well as participate in tennis clinics and serving contests; see tennis demonstrations and join skills activities. Off-court events include crafts, face painting, scavenger hunts, costume photos and Wii Tennis on the Hall of Fame’s 7-foot by 9-foot screen. He tells sea tales Author and illustrator Emerson M. Colwell Jr., a native of Bristol, will debut his children's book, “The Bay Gull,” at scheduled readings during the Fourth of July weekend. The book tells the story of a sea gull that shares a bagel with new friends along a journey through distinctive Rhode Island locations in Bristol, Prudence Island, Hog Island, Newport, Jamestown, Narragansett and Block Island. Creativity and freedom, celebrated For a patriotic theme that ignites the fireworks of imagination, join Chabot Fine Art Gallery for a preview of its latest exhibit, “Freedom of Expression.” Much in the way our country’s population thrives in diversity, the tools of the artists in the exhibit vary widely, from pre-cast sculpture to oil on canvas. The right to assembly, indeed Nothing says independence like blocking traffic and marching right down the middle of the street like you own it. Well, every Fourth of July the towns of Bristol, Glocester and Cumberland do just that with their annual Independence Day parades. Bristol’s 224th Fourth of July Parade is the oldest parade in the country. Visitors are encouraged to arrive before 8 a.m. to secure a good place at this hugely popular event. Glocester’s 83rd annual Ancients and Horribles Parade is billed as “nothing is sacred,” with locals spoofing political heavyweights and a tradition of characters, costumes and camaraderie. Finally, Cumberland’s Arnold Mill’s July 4th Celebration will showcase costumes, the Shriner’s marchers, bands, floats and music entertainment. An urban celebration with personal touches In partnership with Providence and its Department of Arts, Culture & Tourism, the Black Repertory Company brings the Sound Session festival to the city again this year.
